XXX Wasteland Exclusive Interview: Dylan Ryder

Bluebird Films contract starlet Dylan Ryder has been climbing the ranks of the adult world since returning in 2008 following a break from the industry. The dark-haired beauty appeared in several Bluebird feature titles before signing an exclusive deal with the studio two months ago and recently landed the starring role in the upcoming BatfXXX spin-off KatwomanXXX, which is anticipated by many adult insiders to be one of the blockbuster releases of 2011.

Dylan kindly spoke with XXX Wasteland to discuss her part in KatwomanXXX, working as a substance abuse counselor and correctional officer during her time away from porn, common misconceptions many people have about the adult business, her future plans and many more topics.

XXX: Can you give us some background on yourself and how you entered the adult industry?

DR: Sure. I actually had a friend who was in porn, but at the time I probably didn’t even know it. She kind of introduced me to the idea of making some extra money.
When I got into it, I really didn’t think I could go through with it or be any good at it, and truth be told, I really wasn’t super-comfortable with my body at that time. So, I ended up doing it for about six months and then decided to leave to go and pursue another career. Then I realized I liked this much better and it gives you more flexibility, so I wanted to come back. I decided to leave my other “real” job and come back to porn.

XXX: You signed an exclusive contract with Bluebird Films earlier this year, is that right?

DR: Yes, March 1.

XXX: Can you tell us how your experience with the studio has been and talk a little bit about some of the films you have done with them?

DR: Well, I’m Katwoman – you’ve probably seen me Twittering about that. I’m going to be Katwoman and that has been interesting so far. I play an anesthesiologist in Nip/Fuck, which is another movie that we’re doing. So far, it’s been good. We just got back into production, so all month we’ve been working on the movies. In between all of that, Lisa, our amazing publicist with Rising Star, has had me doing tons of different interviews and events for Bluebird. So, when I’m not physically here at the office doing stuff or shooting, I’m doing interviews – kind of like what we’re doing right now – or working on my website. It actually keeps me quite busy. I like it.

W! I think I know maybe three people in the world who are like you. You’re a pretty public stoner, but you work all the time. If I could do that, I would. But I can’t focus if I’m smoking. I can’t make myself work, but your brain must just be wired that way.

JH I’m a little hyperactive. I think that’s what it is. So when I smoke it kind of calms me down and makes me able to focus on what I need to do. And I’ve been smoking since I was twelve, so… I am definitely partial to some of the weed deals I find when browsing on the internet!

W! laughing Really?

JH Yeah. It’s like ingrained in me. I’ll get people stoned on my medical grade stuff and they’ll be like, “I’m so fuckin’ baked,” but I’m like, “Really? I just smoked the same amount as you, and I feel fine!” I never get, like, “Oh, I’m so fucked up” or anything. I never get like that. It doesn’t affect me like that. And I’m glad. I can do it and I can sort through pictures for hours.

W! I know a few other people like that, where they smoke and they just zone in. But I’m not. I’m like bouncing off the walls and I can’t focus on anything. But, man, it’d be really nice to be able to be stoned all the time.

JH The thing I don’t get is the people I know who get stoned and go to the gym. I have friends who will get stoned and go to the gym. I’m like, “Are you crazy?”

W! Weeeeeeird. I’d be like, “Oh my god everybody’s looking at me! Why are they staring at me?” Well, anyway, do you have a special man or woman in your life right now?

JH Um, no. Well I broke up with Jules [Jordan] last year. It was a very amicable breakup. I really wanted to focus on my career, and he really wanted to focus on building his company. And it just wasn’t the right time for me to be in a serious relationship like that. So, I’m still best friends with him. I talk to him every day, and he comes over to see the dogs, you know. People ask if we’re going to get back together someday, and I dunno, but no matter what he’ll always be one of my best friends and my business partner.

DYLAN RYDER:  Thank you……

DG:  Describe what Blue Bird offers their talent and fans alike, and what does achieving exclusive contract status with them mean to you?

DR:  …..ummm, basically what it means to me is everything I’ve been doing and working for in the past year, I’ll actually get paid for now.

DG:  …always a plus.

DR:  (laughs) But seriously I love everybody here; from everyone that is a part of the production crew, actual office staff that works here is just a dream to work with. Nick Steele and Paul Chaplan–both my two bosses and owners of the company–they actually give me a lot of artistic freedom and input, to be part of the production, part of picking and choosing exactly what goes on where and who I get to work with, to make sure the scenes I’m giving them are the best possible scenes. I really like to get involved with everything I do. Not many companies actually give you the freedom to have so much to say. It’s nice to know my opinion matters and my voice is heard, so it’s fun.

DG:  Oh definitely- So are you involved with the creative elements too, in terms of the scripts and casting?

DR:  I get to have a lot of input, which is really cool. Before I came in here I was actually learning how to pick the pictures that go on the covers of the movies.
